I am trying to do the same thing to my 2012 f350 lariat. saw your thread about doing the upgrade to the navigation style radio. It does not disable the camera in the mirror (which can be handy when backing up). You can contact 4D Tech and get a cable to also display the camera in the radio. You will need the GPS/satellite antenna on the roof or one of the smaller magnetic antenna you can locate on the dash or exterior. If you can find one, you should be able to swap it out without much problems. I do not think it requires the VIN to be "flashed" into the radio. IT is self contained with the radio, nav, dvd, hard disk, etc inside the "brick". Much of what you are saying pertains to the 2013 and newer trucks. I think you'll see more bang for your buck with speaker upgrade alone, than a new head unit and sub even. Put money into the speaker budget and leave the current Ford head unit, and a small sub. New head unit may help the sound a bit, but again more power to bad speakers, not going to do much. Add an amplifier and you'll more than likely destroy them with no sound benefit.
